MAX REGER — Organ Works Vol. 3 (Gerhard Weinberger) 2CD (2016) SACD Hybrid | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Along with other chorale fantasias and chorale preludes, vol.3 of our edition of Max Reger’s organ works presents his Twelve Pieces op.59. These works inaugurated Reger’s series of composite works intended for practical use in religious services. These are the only works by Reger based on Gregorian melodies, which, however in no way evoke modal harmonic structures but are fully integrated into his complex harmonic structures. prestomusic

MAX REGER — Organ Works Vol. 4 (Gerhard Weinberger) 2CD (2017) SACD Hybrid | FLAC (tracks), lossless

The Reger Edition continues, following three releases accompanied by rave reviews from the critics. klassik-heute wrote in 2015, ‘In this sumptuous music Gerhard Weinberger turns enthusing technical virtuosity into an audio event. We can eagerly look forward to the other volumes of this complete recording and already certify that this edition will do an outstanding job of initially introducing the Reger beginner to his organ cosmos.’ And Musik & Theater opined in 2016, ‘These discs rank with the best currently available recordings in the field of Reger’s organ music.’ Vol. 4 again features two CDs in the best Surround Sound. The focus is formed by Reger’s op. 57, to which he added the adjective ‘Symphonic’, thereby making it absolutely clear that this work would represent a high point not only in his own organ oeuvre but also in the whole of the organ literature. In his op. 145 collection published in early 1916 – first designated as the ‘Seven Organ Pieces’ in posthumous editions – all the pieces have in common the quotation of chorales corresponding in content to the particular work title. The Introduction and (above all) the Passacaglia in F minor are surely the most outstanding numbers among the twelve pieces constituting his Monologues op. 63. prestomusic

MAX REGER — Organ Works Vol. 5 (Gerhard Weinberger) 2CD (2018) SACD Hybrid | FLAC (tracks), lossless

CPO's successful Reger edition continues here with the fifth volume in the successful series, even as critics are still raving about the previous release. Musik & Theater wrote of Volume 4: "These recordings number among the best currently available." The German organist and choral conductor, Gerhard Weinberger, studied organ with Franz Lehrndorfer and church music at the Musikhochschule in Munich. In 1971, he was the prize winner in organ at the renowned international ARD Music Competition. In 1974, after spending three years directing the choir at Saint Lorenz Basilica in Kempten, Gerhard Weinberger assumed a teaching post in organ and church music at the Munich Musikhochschule. He was Professor of Organ there from 1977 to 1983. Currently he is Professor of Organ and Director of the Church Music Department at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and of the Leipzig New Bach Society directorate. Gerhard Weinberger's wide repertoire ranges from pre-Baroque to music of the 20th century, with a special emphasis on the works of J.S. Bach and Max Reger. He has given recitals throughout Europe, Asia and America. amazon

MAX REGER — Organ Works Vol. 6 (Gerhard Weinberger) 2CD (2019) SACD Hybrid | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Our successful Reger edition now once again continues, and the critics continue to be more than enthusiastic about the volumes released to date. Musik & Theater has even claimed, 'These recordings number among the best releases currently available in the field of Reger’s organ music'. And Vol. 6 again presents two SACDs in the best Surround Sound. The thirty little chorale preludes for the most familiar numbers in the Chorales op. 135a, composed by Reger expressly with the organist’s traditional duties in mind, occupy the center stage. A glance at the countless pieces of so-called practical liturgical music composed before and after Reger demonstrates that the quality of this collection can hardly be overestimated, given the fact that it offers what might be termed 'Reger en miniature'. The wealth of the compositional ideas selected by him justifies the presentation of op. 135a in its entirety. amazon

REGER : Piano Concerto In F Minor, Op 114 ♦ STRAUSS : Burleske (Marc-André Hamelin · Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin · Ilan Volkov) (2011) Serie The Romantic Piano Concerto – 53 | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Volume 53 in Hyperion's acclaimed series, The Romantic Piano Concerto, presents two works of such tonal complexity, textural density, and late vintage that they should properly be regarded as post-Romantic, though they are not outside the broad purview of this extensive survey. Certainly, Max Reger's Piano Concerto in F minor qualifies as post-Romantic by virtue of its composition date of 1910, and Richard Strauss' Burlesque in D minor, though completed in 1886, is forward-looking in its textural lushness and harmonic ripeness. Because these are also enormously challenging pieces that require phenomenal performing skills, the presence of the superb Marc-André Hamelin as soloist guarantees that they are played as accurately and brilliantly as possible. The accompaniment provided by Ilan Volkov and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is dramatic and brooding in the Reger and vigorous and muscular in the Strauss, so Hamelin is given suitable support. Hyperion's nuanced recording captures everything with great separation, so the orchestra never overwhelms the piano, and all the inner parts are easily heard. While this album will interest fans of music from the period, casual classical listeners may find the best way to appreciate the music is by paying attention to Hamelin's artistry. Indeed, this exceptional pianist makes this CD attractive to a much wider audience than would normally seek out these works. Blair Sanderson

MAX REGER : Clarinet Quintet · String Sextet (Ensemble Villa Musica) (2000) APE (image+.cue), lossless

This is about as enjoyable a disc of Reger's chamber music as can be imagined. It includes one the Bavarian fin de siècle composer's best-known chamber works, the Clarinet Quintet in A major, along with the relatively familiar String Sextet in F major, a coupling that should ensure the disc's appeal. Just as important to the disc's success, though, are the performances by Ensemble Villa Musica, which are musically incisive, expressively affecting, and as close to lovely as any performances of Reger's music are likely to get. With his dulcet tone and fluent technique, clarinetist Ulf Rodenhäuser turns in an impressive interpretation of the Clarinet Quintet, admirably supported by four of the Ensemble Villa Musica string players. Two of those string players, along with four of the group's other musicians deliver a rugged and insightful account of the String Sextet, with a reading of the Largo con gran expressione that elucidates its lush textures as it clarifies its complex counterpoint. Though these performances may or may not achieve the nearly impossible trick of making Reger's music appealing to broad general audiences -- Brahms' fans may wonder why Reger went so far toward atonality while Schoenberg's fans may wonder why he didn't go further -- Reger devotees will likely be well pleased. Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm's digital sound is amazingly clear, colorful, and immediate. James Leonard     Tracklist + Credits :

MAX REGER : Cello Sonatas (Alban Gerhardt · Markus Becker) 2CD (2008) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

These are possibly the best sonatas for cello and piano since Brahms and the best suites for cello solo since Bach. And they are by none other than Max Reger: the hard-working, hard-drinking Bavarian composer who saw himself as those composers' musical heir. As performed by cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Markus Becker, Reger's works for cello substantiate the comparisons. The sonatas and suites come from every stage of his compositional career, from the very early Sonata in F minor, Op. 5, to the very late Opus 131 suites, written only two years away from his premature death. Gerhardt has a strong yet subtle technique that easily lets him slip into Reger's long-limbed themes and contrapuntal textures, plus a rich but clear tone and a way of phrasing that keeps the music moving even when the tempo is Largo. Pianist Becker joins Gerhardt as a full partner in the sonatas where the piano writing is as prominent and virtuosic as the cello writing, and he's fully up to the task. Becker's big but nuanced tone allows him to blend, balance, and often oppose Gerhardt's stalwart cello. Hyperion's 2007 digital sound is warm, round, deep, and inviting.
