EMBRYO - Wiesbaden 1972 (1972-2008) WV (image+.cue), lossless

On December 17th, 1972, Embryo and Aus dem Nichts played in the Wartburg, a Wiesbaden hall. It was one of the gigs that were recorded by Xhol (Caravan) acquaintance Muck Krieger. His recording equipment was then state-of-the-art: an Uher tape recorder CR 124 and two Revox microphones for the spatial acoustics. The result is accordingly well, which you can hear for yourselves now. Hansi Fischer, previously member of Xhol (Caravan) and Embryo, joined the band for the last track. Of his group at that time, Aus dem Nichts, one track from this gig has also been conserved and has been added to the CD as a bonus track. Its artistic style resembles that of the Embryo tracks: rather freely played progressive jazz-rock with world-music elements. The meagre singing is somehow hidden behind the instrumental sound. GOD

EMBRYO - Umsonst Und Draußen (1977-2017) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

From 1975 until 1978, Embryo played at the Vlotho ”Umsonst und draußen” festival every year. Their concert from July 1977 on the sports ground, figuring as festival site, in front of about 26,000 people was recorded professionally by Ulrich Wilkening, operating the soundboard. The recording has been preserved till this day. In fact unreleased, except for the track, ”Getalongwithasong”, which appeared on the double LP ”Umsonst und draußen – Vlotho 77” back then, and later as well on the 4CD box “Aufbrüche”. Here is now the whole Embryo gig of that festival, in the well-known Embryo style: jazz-rock influenced by world music. The sound is excellent, as is to be expected from an expert. If there will be an LP edition isn’t certain as yet. GOD

EMBRYO ft. JIMMY JACKSON - Steig Aus (1972-1998) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Steig Aus marks a turning point for Embryo. Recorded in 1971-1972, during three separate sessions that also gave birth to Rocksession, the album captures the group actively looking for the ethnic fusion that will soon become its main m.o. for the better part of the decade. It also signals the beginning of the group's distancing from the record industry -- both albums were rejected by their major label, which led to a transaction with the forward-looking small label Brain. Steig Aus features extremely inspired jazz-rock jams, which makes it a lot less friendly than their 1974 hit record, a lot jazzier too, but still a breathtaking journey into Krautrock-meets-American free jazz-meets-North African percussion. The first session yielded the side-long "Call," a loosely structured suite, and "Dreaming Girls," a Miles Davis-like ballad. Both tracks feature drummer Christian Burchard, bassist Jörg Evers, violinist Edgar Hoffmann, U.S. organist Jimmy Jackson, and American jazz keyboardist Mal Waldron. The latter, who had previously played with Eric Dolphy and Max Roach, among other luminaries, was called in as a guest. "Radio Marrakesch/Orient Express," which ended up opening the album, was recorded a while later, when the group reconvened in the studio, minus Hoffmann and Evers (the latter being replaced by Dave King). The track is already opening a window on Middle Eastern influences, with extra ethnic touches (particularly in the percussion department) added a few months later, when the group came back from a trip to North Africa. Steig Aus is a pretty unique cross between German psychedelic rock and American electric jazz. It is probably not the best place to start exploring Embryo's discography, but it deserves special attention nonetheless. François Couture

EMBRYO - We Keep On (1972-1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

We Keep On is the German art/jazz rock band Embryo's most successful recording. It's also one of their best. In late 1972, saxophonist Charlie Mariano joined Embryo along with guitarist Roman Bunka. Mariano's already encyclopedic knowledge of world music forms was a welcome addition to the band; they sought to fuse jazz and space rock -- à la their countrymen Can -- with the various rhythms and harmonic sensibilities of folk musics across the globe. Bunka also played the Turkish saz and was a great, if unconventional, vocalist. Embryo's leader, Christian Burchard, took up everything from drums to marimba to Mellotron on this set to complement pianist Dieter Miekautsch's Rhodes and clavinet work. And Mariano played not only sax and flute but nagasuram and bamboo flutes as well. Here, on "Ehna, Ehna, Abu Lele," West African rhythms danced with jazz rock and wove something entirely new from the roots of both. On "Hackbrett-Dance," saz, marimba, and percussion became something out of time and space that might have come from any North African nation, but found a place in the tripped-out world of psychedelic space music as well -- check the recordings of Angus MacLise for a frame of reference here. But it is on the Miles-influenced jazz-funk of "No Place to Go," which used the Jack Johnson groove to achieve new rock ecstasies, that the album really comes into view for its revolutionary contribution to the language of assimilation. The CD version also contains two welcome bonus tracks from the session, a nearly 16-minute "Ticket to India" and an eight-and-a-half-minute extended improv called "Flute, Saz and Marimba" that could have come from one of Don Cherry's early-'70s recordings. Highly recommended. Thom Jurek

EMBRYO - Rocksession (1973-1998) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Progressive rock provides the framework but jazz-rock gives the flavor to this powerfully seductive album-length workout, four extended numbers (on which the vocals who are present are buried so far down in the mix that these are essentially instrumentals) that surge forth with saxophone solos and keyboard runs to rival the best-known English and U.S. prog rock bands -- and Christian Burchard's myriad percussion sounds (outdoing even his keyboard timbres at times) are in a class of their own. The difference between Embryo and their English-speaking rivals is that Embryo are content to take their time, even compared with acts such as King Crimson, getting where they're going, and don't mind going in long, extended detours into the funkier side of jazz. "Entrances" -- which, despite its title, is the second track on the album -- is worth the price of admission by itself for its seeming digressions, which all pull together around Jorg Evers' amazing bass work. And the rest of the record is no letdown, even after the quarter-hour of soaring excursions on that number. It all should have been more widely heard outside of Germany and Central Europe. EMBRYO - Embryo's Reise (1979-1994) APE (image+.cue), lossless

Reise is an audio documentary of Embryo's end of the '70s "Journey" through the Middle East, a musical diary of their various experiences with master musicians and street players alike, from Bombay to the docks of Calcutta and beyond. No clinical exercise in musicology or studio session, it lives and breathes with the sounds and smells of music created from the creative flow of life in progress. Ethnic instruments, jazz, rock and chants combine to create a vibrant tapestry of sound on this magnificent double album. Archie Patterson

EMBRYO | CHARLIE MARIANO | KARNATAKA COLLEGE OF PERCUSSION - "Life" (1980-2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Christian Burchard's world music fusion band Embryo has long been a running project of nearly inconceivable depth and breadth. This 1979 live album brings together recordings from an Asian and Indian tour featuring the Embryo sextet with saxophonist Edgar Hofmann, guitarist Jay Zier, bassist Uwe Mullrich, Friedemann Josch on flutes, Michael Wehemeyer on harmonium, and Burchard on marimbas, along with special guest and Embryo alumnus Charlie Mariano on soprano saxophone. What made this tour special was the addition of the Karnataka College of Percussion, a 12-piece Indian percussion ensemble, to the proceedings led by T.A.S. Mani. The result is nothing less than the total synthesis of Embryo's otherworldly sound, crashing, loping, and improvising around set rhythmic and harmonic patters, augmented by the sophistication of this brilliant percussion ensemble who never, ever, overplays. There are four pieces here, the most satisfying of which is the opener, "Cello, Cello" -- and that could be because it is just such a surprise, as everything here rocks! The level of improvisation here is so intimate, so symbiotic as to be literally almost scary that this kind of communication can take place between musicians -- many of whom have never played together before. Literally, these four selections will astonish you at the very least, and perhaps even take your breath away. Thom Jurek

EMBRYO - La Blama Sparozzi (1982-1999) 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This sprawling double album is the last Embryo title to feature the great guitarist Roman Bunka. Here, as on many of the band's other recordings, the basis sextet led by Christian Burchard is augmented by dozens of other musicians to varying effect. For starters, Embryo's live recordings are always their best. That is testified to here, as well, since the album was recorded in studios all over Europe, and features a live performance from Munich. It's the sprawl that testifies simultaneously to this album's greatest strength and weakness. While Embryo's musical restlessness counts for great improvised music, particularly in concert settings, the band's studio offerings sometimes lack focus, and that is certainly the case here. There are few long pieces on these two CDs, with 22 tracks in all. Taken as a whole, it would be unfair to say that these are Embryo's "pop" recordings; it is not inaccurate to say that they are consciously more accessible than on any of their other outings. This band has never aspired to relevance in terms of pop culture, before or after these sessions. The vocal tracks here fall flat and are uninspiring, while the music itself is brilliant and often visionary. This is a mixed bag to be sure, but a far from uninteresting one. Thom Jurek
