BENNY CARTER - Jazz Giant (1958-2004) SACD / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Benny Carter had already been a major jazz musician for nearly 30 years when he recorded this particularly strong septet session for Contemporary. With notable contributions from tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, trombonist Frank Rosolino and guitarist Barney Kessel, Carter (who plays a bit of trumpet on "How Can You Lose") is in superb form on a set of five standards and two of his originals. This timeless music is beyond the simple categories of "swing" or "bop" and should just be called "classic". by Scott Yanow

BEN WEBSTER - The Warm Moods (1963-2001) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The veteran tenor Ben Webster had a very warm tone on ballads that contrasted with the aggressive biting sound he used on faster material. For this 1960 set Webster is joined by a string quartet (arranged by Johnny Richards) and a rhythm section for his melodic interpretations of a dozen standards. Even when simply stating the melody, Webster brings out unexpected beauty in the songs. His tone has never been accurately duplicated and is the main reason to pick up this CD reissue  by Scott Yanow

BILLY HOLIDAY - 1933-1937 {CC, 582} (1991) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Two things stand out in these early recordings. One, of course, is Lady Day's already fully mature style. The other is the superb quality of the musicians who backed her. A Benny Goodman combo; Bunny Berigan and Artie Shaw with Joe Bushkin and Cozy Cole; Jonah Jones with Ben Webster and Teddy Wilson; Buster Bailey; a bunch of Basie-ites including the superb Lester Young. Even without her this would be a gem. by John Storm Roberts
