PETER ERSKINE - Peter Erskine (1982-1991) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Drummer Peter Erskine's debut as a leader (originally made for
Contemporary and reissued on CD in the OJC series) finds him using top
players (most of whom had played with Steps Ahead) in various
combinations. Erskine performs a few of his own originals (including an
11-minute "All's Well That Ends" and a short drum solo) plus "My Ship,"
Wayne Shorter's "E.S.P.," and Bob Mintzer's "Change of Mind." With such
musicians as trumpeter Randy Brecker, tenors Michael Brecker and
Mintzer, pianist Kenny Kirkland, and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri getting
some solo space, this post-bop music (from an often-overlooked set) is
of consistent high quality. by Scott Yanow

PETER ERSKINE - Transition (1987) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
The music on Peter Erskine's second recording as a leader (all but two songs are by either the drummer-leader or Vince Mendoza) is disappointingly forgettable, including Erskine's five-part, 22-minute "Suite: Music from Shakespeare's 'King Richard II'." With such fine players as Joe Lovano and Bob Mintzer on tenors, guitarist John Abercrombie, keyboardists Kenny Werner and Don Grolnick, bassist Marc Johnson and Peter Gordon on french horn, the solos are generally quite good, but the lack of any memorable melodies and the dated-sounding synthesizers largely sink the effort. by Scott Yanow

PETER ERSKINE • MARTY KRYSTALL • BUELL NEIDLINGER - Aurora (1989) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This trio outing signifies a little-known gem that stands among the top modern jazz releases of 1989, as well-traveled drummer Peter Erskine wields his mighty chops while also serving as the traffic director for bassist Buell Neidlinger and saxophonist Marty Krystall. The opening number, "Daddy Trane & Cousin Wayne," is a wondrous piece, marked by Krystall's tunefully melodic choruses atop the rhythm section's slowly enacted jazz waltz pulse. Here and throughout, the band infuses soul-drenched modern jazz motifs with airy and somewhat open-ended three-way dialogues. They incorporate a few well-placed twists and turns into the grand mix, featuring effervescent swing vamps and subtle tonal contrasts amid their stringent attention to detail. The trio's clever outlook is starkly evident during its calypso-soul-blues yet predominantly free jazz rendition of Albert Ayler's "Ghosts," while they mesh a quaint Texas roadhouse blues motif with modern jazz-type dialogue on the piece titled "Like Latin." A super fine outing indeed, and strongly recommended. by Glenn Astarita

PETER ERSKINE • PALLE DANIELSSON • JOHN TAYLOR - You Never Know (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The material on this date falls comfortably within the realm of what the ECM label is famous for; meticulously recorded, lyrical chamber music (and the requisite lush reverb is ever present). In addition to leader Erskine, the playing and writing of English pianist, John Taylor, is featured. Taylor is an excellent technician with considerable harmonic agility; his approach is heavily influenced by Bill Evans via Keith Jarrett. Bassist Palle Danielsson completes a very sympathetic, highly interactive rhythm section. "Evans Above" and "Pure & Simple" are by Taylor, whose writing tends to conjour an English pastoral aesthetic and often has elements of so-called new age piano music, a left hand ostinato for example. To Taylor's credit, however, his compositions never get as predictable as most music in that genre. The same is true of writer Vince Mendoza, whose tunes are also featured on this recording. Taylor and the group are most fluid on the Cole Porter standard, "Everything I Love." Peter Erskine is one of the most versatile and accomplished drummers in modern music. Erskine's only contribution to the session as a writer, "On the Lake," is lovely in its sheer simplicity. by Lee Bloom

PETER ERSKINE • PALLE DANIELSSON • JOHN TAYLOR - Time Being (1994-2016) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Although it is easy to stereotype Peter Erskine as a fusion drummer due to his notable work with Weather Report, in reality he is a very flexible percussionist. On his trio session for ECM, Erskine is mostly content to back his sidemen (pianist John Taylor and bassist Palle Danielsson). This CD is actually most interesting for the playing of Taylor who contributes three of the originals and plays in a style not that far from Keith Jarrett. In general the music starts out pretty quiet but builds its intensity and holds one's interest. by Scott Yanow

PETER ERSKINE • PALLE DANIELSSON • JOHN TAYLOR - Juni (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
A beautiful collection full of subtlety and nuance, Juni is not the type of recording one would expect to be led by a drummer of Peter Erskine's high-octane pedigree. In fact, this trio's music owes more to that of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett's standards trio than to the work of Weather Report, Maynard Ferguson, or any of Erskine's other aggregations. The playing on this, the group's fourth under Erskine's name, is soft, spatial, melodic, and accessible. Pianist John Taylor weaves an introspective spell with his lyrical touch, and bassist Palle Danielsson is superb in support and when stepping into the solo spotlight. Erskine himself is continuously inventive within the context of these balladic compositions. by Jim Newsom

MARTY EHRLICH • PETER ERSKINE • MICHAEL FORMANEK - Relativity (1999) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
You might justifiably expect sparks to fly on this collaborative effort, given the careers of Ehrlich and his compatriots, trio members Michael Formanek and Peter Erskine. Unfortunately, it rarely happens, and while all three are exquisite players individually, this disappointing, often tepid recording stands as an opportunity not fully realized. In part it might be the result of different styles: Ehrlich, of course, is the more adventurous of the group, but Erskine, whose heart is usually in more commercial ventures, seems comfortable with the music. The pieces are all originals by the trio members, but there are times when a certain boredom pervades the music. To be fair, there are some aggressive, exciting moments, too, but they are the exception. Ehrlich continues to show remarkable versatility on alto and tenor saxophones, clarinet, and flute (where he is particularly lyrical). by Steve Loewy

PETER ERSKINE • NGUYÊN LÊ • MICHEL BENITA - E_L_B (2001) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Although there is close interplay between the three musicians and drummer Peter Erskine gets top billing, this set is primarily of interest due to the versatility of guitarist Nguyên Lê. Lê's playing ranges from a lazy introspective style similar to Bill Frisell to fiery and rockish improvising. The 11 group originals generally lack any memorable melodies and instead set moods in which the musicians improvise together. Despite the talk of the group being a democracy, Lê is mostly in the lead, with bassist Michel Benita having a fair number of solos and Erskine being in a supportive role. Much of this set is overly sleepy, leaving listeners waiting for something to happen but, despite the high musicianship of the musicians, little does. by Scott Yanow

THE NORRBOTTEN BIG BAND - The Avatar Sessions : The Music of Tim Hagans (2009) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
There are remarkably few progressive big bands of note, though one that
merits entry into their ranks is the Norrbotten Big Band. Trumpeter Tim
Hagans, an American who serves as its artistic director, contributed the
originals for this date, while he recruited a number of star soloists
from the U.S. for these sessions. He envisioned "Buckeyes" after being
inspired by a conversation between Ornette Coleman and Joe Lovano;
though there are rapid-fire free jazz portions played by the orchestra,
with the leader and tenor saxophonist George Garzone playing the role of
Lovano, the results are anything but a train wreck. The hip boogaloo
"Boo" features the sassy trumpet of Randy Brecker, with guitarist Vic
Juris added to the rhythm section. The lush ballad "Here with Me"
showcases David Liebman's magical soprano sax, backed by Hagans' superb
scoring of the reeds and brass. "Palt Seanuts" is a breezy bop vehicle
that Hagans claims is based on a Viking sea song, though he may be
engaging in a Dizzy Gillespie-like put-on in his notes. The sauntering
"Rufus at Gilly's" casts the spotlight on veteran bassist Rufus Reid,
who demonstrates why he is one of the most in-demand players with his
inventive, bluesy solo technique. Highly recommended! by Ken Dryden

FRANK MACCHIA - Folk Songs for Jazzers (2009) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Entire jazz albums devoted to folk songs are rare, though many of the
songs within Frank Macchia's CD have been recorded by jazz bands at one
time or another. But Macchia succeeds because the multi-reed player puts
his own stamp on these familiar melodies with imaginative charts that
keep the listener guessing. A perfect example is the opening track,
"I've Been Working on the Railroad," which has stops in swing, Latin,
and New Orleans, all with playful solos and tight ensemble work. The
cool-toned setting of "Oh! Susanna" sounds straight out of the '50s,
with rich writing for reeds and brass. Perhaps the most startling piece
is the fusion rendition of "The Arkansas Traveler" utilizing electric
keyboards, guitar, and bass in a big, brassy, in-your-face manner.
Macchia transforms "Erie Canal" into a funky vehicle for Bill
Reichenbach on tuba, while vocalist Tierney Sutton is added for "Red
River Valley" with Grant Geissman's jarring electric guitar providing
contrast in the background. There's never a dull moment in Frank
Macchia's arrangements of these well-known tunes, and there remains a
wealth of traditional folk melodies that are ripe for his future
experiments. by Ken Dryden
